BDCL Lightning Tournament 2005 The annual Team Lightning Tournament was held on Tuesday 15th March 2005 at Olton's venue, Tyseley Working Mens Club. 14 teams from various clubs took part in three sections, with four boards in each match. Olton fielded 4 teams and contributed 2 players to a scratch team formed in conjunction with Mercia. Games were played at the rate of 10 seconds per move. The action is fast and frantic and the event proved enjoyable for all competitors. Olton A failed to regain their Championship from last year, beaten by a strong South Birmingham A side, who only dropped half a point to Robert Reynolds. Section A had 5 teams entered and the Olton B team finished on nine points out of 16, half a point above the A team. It was a relatively poor performance from the reigning champions, but South Birmingham A were always the stronger side. The A's even lost to the B team, with Phil Holt scoring the only win. Everyone won against South Birmingham B and it was 3/4 against Mutual/Kynoch. For the B side, Dave Cheshire scored 2 out of 4 for the B team, with Rob Wallman and Kevin Yeomans both scoring 3 wins. The C team competed in section B, with three other teams, in a double round-robin tournament. They finished first-equal on 13 points in a closely fought section. Their results were quite extraordinary, as their scores against each opposing team were reversed in the return match with reversed colours. Even stranger, Mark Cundy scored 3 out of 6, winning the first game against each opponent and losing the second. Andy Cottom, Martin Pope and Dave Stockwin all played well to help the team to a respectable total. In the third section, Olton D finished second equal with 8½/16. Richard Liszewski scored 2½/4, Jim Gillespie, Bram Garner and Stuart Bradley weighing in with 2 points each. Meanwhile, Bill Yeomans and John Clulee joined 2 Mercia players in a scratch team, which finished on 6 points.

2005 successes for Olton

Olton Division 1 completed a great season for the club, by winning the Terrill Trophy for the first time. More

Birmingham League AGM

The Birmingham League AGM took place at the club on Tuesday 7th June, where the various trophies and awards for the season were presented.

Alan Lloyd wins Olton 10-minute Tournament

An internal 10-minute tournament was held at the club this week. Alan Lloyd scored a maximum 5/5 to win, with Robert Wallman and Carl Pickering (dropping in from Kenilworth) on 3½.

Olton Players share in Lightning glory

Two Olton players managed to win shares in the Leamington League Lighning Tournament Open and Under-125 sections, which was held at Solihull. Read more

Individual success

Division 3's relegation has been a traumatic episode, but on a  brighter note, Andy Cottom has won the Division's Individual trophy. He beat Mike Groombridge of Walsall Kipping in the final.
