Birmingham League Lightning Tournament
This was held at Olton on Tuesday 9th March. Teams of 4 competed at the rate of 10 seconds per move. There were three graded sections and Olton entered 5 teams, with 17 teams being fielded in all.
The A team were entered in the top section, but this year's competition saw West Bromwich and Sutton Coldfield dominating proceedings. They beat previous winners South Birmingham A and Mutual A, but were lucky to draw with the B side and lost to the two front runners. They finished with 9½ points in 4th place.
The B side drew with Mutual A and took 1½ points off the other 3 teams, but could have done better than 8½ points and 5th place. Mark Cundy scored an impressive 4½ out of 5 on board 3.
The C team competed in Section B, scoring 6 points in 4 matches. They drew with Redditch B and Mutual B and scored 1½ against South Birmingham B.
The D team were in Section C and they put in a good performance, scoring 10½ points. They finished third behind Mutual C and Sutton Coldfield B. Karol Grzywaczewski scored a maximum 5/5, accounting for nearly half the team's points. Their 3-1 win over Redditch was a good contribution to the team score.
The E team might have stood for 'Enthusiasts' - They gave their best, but a mixture of long-standing members and newcomers managed 6½ points, including a draw against the D team.
