Olton v South Birmingham 2015
The match was held at Olton's venue on Tuesday 1st September. Despite being short of a few top players, South Birmingham were still strong throughout the field and their players were clearly more match fit than the home side. Alan Lloyd was late arriving and played the game in the remaining half-hour or so, but lost. Richard Smith and Gary Hope had good wins and Richard reynolds might have done better in a double-edged game.
A series of losses in the middle order caused most damage to the Olton chances and again, some games might have finished more favourably. The slide was halted a little with draws from Frank Jimenez and Jim Gillespie and Karol Grzywaczewski won on board 15. Paul Hodgskin recorded a creditable draw on 16 and there were wins for Pete Singh and Paul Kelly. John Cluee scored what seemed an unlikely draw on board 22 anfd the score finished 14½-8½ to South Birmingham.

Olton took an early lead with wins from Rob Wallman and Paul Kelly, although Tom Evans on bottom board had an early bath. Karol Grzywaczewski lost on 9 to level the score and there were a number of draws in games where Olton were better. Later, wins from Francis Batchelor and Gary Hope seemed to give the away side the edge, but rare losses on the top two boards again levelled the score. Richard Smith had an advantage, but the game became drawn, as did the match.
Olton Summer Tournament 2015
The Tournament started on Tuesday 19th May and will run over 10 weeks.

Summer & Winter Tournaments
The Summer Tournament was won by Mark Cundy from Gary Hope. Frank Jimenez won the Major and Richard Evans won the Minor Championship. See More....
Richard Smith has won the Open Club Championship, after a win and a draw in the final against Karol Grzywaczewski. More information on the Tournaments page.
Richard Evans also won the winter Minor tournament after beating Paul Kelly in the final.
Fixtures 2015-16
The Club's Birmingham & Leamington League Fixtures are now on each team page and on the master list. Please note that some changes have taken place in Divisions 5 and 6 in the BDCL.
AGM and Summer Tournament
The club Summer Tournament started on Tuesday 19th May and run over the next 10 weeks. 7 rounds, Swiss pairing, entry fee £3.50. The first results are here..
Leamington League Finals
The club hosted the Leamington league cup finals this week, after a late switch of venues. Three teams from Banbury won the Open, Under 700 and Under 120 matches against Shirley, Solihull and Leamington.
Leamington Lightning Tournament
Phil Holt has retained the annual Leamington League Individual Lightning Championship. There was a strong field of 44 players in the tournament, the largest entry ever recorded. Other strong players took part, including Russell James, Olivia Smith (both Solihull) and Mark Page (Kenilworth). Phil drew in round 1 against Robert Reynolds and was always chasing for the lead. Drawing with Russell in round 6, he remained half a point behind until the last round. Phil won his game, but Mark Page upset the result by beating Russell.
Robert Reynolds finished with 5½ points out of 9, Marco Ho with 4½ and Bram Garner scored 1 point.
Cup Finals
The club hosted 3 of the Birmingham League cup finals this week and a League Individual final.
BDCL Lightning Tournament
The tournament took place at Olton's venue, Tyseley working Mens Club last night. 10 teams took part in 2 sections based on average grade. Section A was tight after round 4, with South Birmingham A half a point ahead of Olton A. Olton A managed a 4-0 win in the last round, but Richard Reynolds playing for Olton B held on to a point against South Birmingham A. Olton A won with 11½ points from South Birmingham A on 11.
Section B saw a runaway win for South Birmingham C on 15½ points. Sutton
Coldfield B and Mutual Circle both finished with 7½ points but Sutton were
awarded second place on tie-break. Olton C were fifth in Section B.
The overall individual award went to Jonathon Swindells of South Birmingham, who
scored 4/4 on top board in Section A.
