Olton B v Olton A

Garry Evans on board 1 for the B team had much the better of the game early on, with Tayeb Kazemi quite restricted. But the pressure was released and the game was drawn. Richard Evans and Robert Reynolds also drew on board 2, as did Andy Cottom and Warren Archibald on three. Warren was pressing on the King's side, but risked opening his own King and the position became blocked. On board 4, Rory Lynas went into a difficult opening, but Roger Threlfall allowed some attacking chances on the king's side. After some exchanges and a blunder, Roger eventually won. On board 5, Tom Evans got into difficulty in the opening, with a Knight blocking sis Queen's side development. Jim Gillespie with all the momentum took a protracted route to win material and eventually the game. On board 6, Terry Gorman had some opportunity to press on the King's side with his King safely in a blocked centre, but allowed a Knight in and reached the ending a pawn down. Michael Winterman played the ending carefully to win, exchanging the last dangerous Rook off, leaving a passed pawn.

Olton v Shirley

Tayeb Kazemi drew on top board and Robert Reynolds also drew on two. Andy Cottom won on board 3 and Roger Threlfall drew on board 4. Tom Evans drew on Five and Rory Lynas drew on board 6.

Mercia v Olton

Tayeb Kazemi lost on top board, but Robert Reynolds drew on board 2. Andy Cottom won on three and Roger Threlfall drew on board 4. Tom Evans lost on board 5 and warren Archibald drew on six.

Olton v Birmingham University

A poor showing on the night saw Tayeb Kazemi lose on top board and Robert Reynolds draw on two. Andy Cottom lost on bboard 3 and Roger Threlfall lost on four. There were also losses for Garry Evans and Jim Gillespie.

Sutton Coldfield v Olton

Robert Reynolds lost on top board, but Andy Cottom won on two. Roger Threlfall drew on board 3 and Tom Evans drew on four. Rory Lynas lost on board 5 and Jim Gillespie drew on six.

Olton v Warley Quinborne

Tayeb Kaxemi drew on top board and Robert Reynolds also drew on two, Andy Cottom lost badly on board 3 and Roger Threlfall lost on four.Tom Evans managed a win on board 5 nad Garry Evans also won on six, to draw the match.

Central Birmingham v Olton

Robert Reynolds drew on top board and Andy Cottom won on two. Roger Threlfall lost on board 3 and Tom Evans went wrong from a good position to lose. Warren Archibald drew on board 5 and Rory Lynas won on bottom board, for another drawn match.

Oscott v Olton

Robert Reynolds lost to a strong player on top board. Andy Cottom drew on board 2 and Roger Threlfall also drew on three. Tom Evans won on board 4 and Warren Archibald won on five. Richard Evans also won on bottom board to seal the match.

Olton v Redditch

Redditch were stronger on the top boards, but had little trouble in winning all six games.

Lichfield v Olton

Robert Reynolds drew well on top board, but Andy Cottom lost on two. Roger Threlfall also lost on board 3, but Richard Evans drew on four. Jim Gillespie had a good win on board 5 and there was no board 6.

Olton v South Birmingham

Roger Threlfall on 4 fell into an opening trap and was 'In the bath' before the tea had gone cold. Andy Cottom on board 3 looked to have got a Rook trapped, but extracted it and agreed a draw. Tayeb Kazemi on top board also agreed a draw after initial excitement. Robert reynolds on two also agreed a draw after cleaning up the Queen's side. Michael Winterman on bottom board lost a piece early on, but showed some good resilience to offer some dangerous play. It wasn't enough but a good effort. Richard Evans had the better for much of the gamer and eventually won decicively.

Olton v Longbridge

Robert Reynolds drew early on board 2. Andy Cottom had better Queen's side pawn's on board 3 as he went into a Queen and Pawns ending. Trying to find a way to infiltrae the ooponent's space whilst harrassing the King, there was a risk of perpetual check. The opponent, trying to cover all squares mistakenly left a Queen en-prise, but it was not taken until a few moves later when the same thing happened. Tayeb Kazemi took a draw on top board. Tom Evans on board 5 got into a complex, position but was winning material. Another Queen winning opportunity was overlooked, but the game was eventually won. Richard Evans on board 6 seemed to have a huge space advantage and also went on to win. Roger Threlfall went into a Bishop v Knight and pawns ending with a slight disadvantage and eventually lost.

7 points and 11th place.

Tuesday 31st September - Walsall Kipping II 3½-4 Olton

Tayeb Kazemi lost on top board, but Robert Reynolds drew on two. Andy Cottom left his King's side vulnrable on board 3 and eventually got into a mating attack. Roger Threlfall also lost on four to a mating attack against the King. Tom Evans won on board 5 and Garry Evans drew on bottom board.

Homer Trophy Round 1

Thursday 20th November - Warley Quinborne III 3-3 Olton

Robert Reynolds drew on top board. Andy Cottom won on board 2, but Roger Threlfall lost on board 3. Tom Evans won on board 4 and Warren Archibald drew on five. Jim Gillespie lost on bottom board, but the match was won on board count.

Round 2

Tuesday 20th January, Olton 3A 5½-3 Olton 2

Alan Lloyd on board 1 for Olton II won after a good battle with Tayeb Kazemi. Mark Cundy also won on two against Robert Reynolds. Mike Hollier won an exchange on three, but took a while to unravel Roger Threlfall's position. Richard reynolds on board 5 got into a mess against Warren Archibald, losing an exchange and facing a King's side attack. With the remaining pieces in terrible positions, a few risky choices to get them out and indecision by Warren allowed a perpetual check. Garry Evans on six took advantage of mistakes by Jim Gillespie to win very quickly.Richard Liszewski on board 4 had a draw or better against Tom Evans. With the match result not in doubt and time short, what ensued was a chaotic ending where both players appeared to try and lose. Having lost a piece to a promotion, Richard had 4 connected pawns against a Bishop and one. by promoting the lead pawn, the King got in and Richard won.
